Era Of Protestant Reformation (16th century)
-Prior to the Reformation was a time of Church growth, mission work, and the formation of the Catholic Church.
-4th through the 8th century God was raising up groups of believers.
-Missionaries were spreading christianity(torch of testimony of Jesus is passed)
-4th through the 16th century was called "Dark Ages"
-The church in visible form began to decline
15th Century
Stage set for reformation
-John Wickliffe and Tyndale translated bible into English(both were martyred)
16th Century
Reformation
-Martin Luther, Calvin, and John Knox Catholic priests that became protestant reformers.
-Practice of Indulgences by Roman Priests infuriated Luther
-He wrote "95 Pieces"
-95 points of Heresy & lies Pope and Priests were teaching
-He nailed it to the door of the church
-Townspeople read it and a huge revival was ignited.
17th Century
Puritan Era
-Preachers and Pastors who preached in a powerful way were often persecuted
-Bunyon wrote the "Pilgrim's Progress" while in Jail because he refused to quit preaching.
18th Century
Century of Spiritual Awakenings
4 distinct periods of Great Awakenings
1st
-Johnathan Edwards and George Whitfield preached original sin and justification by faith
-Revivals began to break out in America and Europe
2nd Great Awakening
-1795 through 1825
-missionary work, churches formed
-outpourings of the Holy Spirit
Third Great Awakening
-1857 Huge national revival
-The Holy Spirit swept the nation like a wildfire
The two major truths of Revival
-The Holy Spirit comes in much greater measure during revival
-The Holy Spirit has one primary mission, to make real the the gospel of Christ and convert men and women
-1858 prayer revival is possibly the greatest work of God's grace since the apostles
-The civil war started at the end of this revival
-God sent this revival to prepare young men for war
-This was a sovereign movement of prayer which resulted in revival
